Confirming a report from Ben Badler of Baseball America, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com writes that the Phillies had a private workout with Cuban slugger Yasmani Tomas in the Dominican Republic today.

Tomas, a 23-year-old corner outfielder, defected from Cuba in June and was recently cleared for employment by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets and Control. Nearly 200 scouts from MLB teams were on hand for an open showcase on Sunday, but look for a bunch of private workouts in the coming days. Badler hears that the Rangers are up next while Salisbury writes that he is also expected to work out for the Giants, Marlins, Padres and Tigers.

Rusney Castillo landed the richest deal ever for a Cuban player when he signed a seven-year, $72.5 million with the Red Sox last month, but he probably won’t hold that distinction for long. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe recently reported that Tomas could command as much as $100 million.
