Dodgers starting catcher Yasmani Grandal appears to have avoided a serious jaw injury after being hit by a foul ball Sunday, but backup catcher A.J. Ellis has been placed on the disabled list with knee inflammation.
Grandal’s arrival this offseason pushed Ellis into a lesser role, as he went from averaging 433 plate appearances during the previous three seasons to logging just 106 plate appearances so far this year.
Austin Barnes is getting the starting behind the plate tonight and figures to take over for Ellis as Grandal’s understudy.
