Rafael Montero shut down after setback on rehab assignment

The Mets were hoping that right-hander Rafael Montero would be healthy enough to contribute down the stretch as they attempt to secure the National League East crown, but it’s increasingly clear that it won’t happen.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Montero has been shut down after suffering a setback Sunday during his latest minor league rehab start with High-A St. Lucie. The thought is that he could be done for the year.

The 24-year-old Montero has been sidelined since the end of April with what was termed as right rotator cuff inflammation. Progress has been slow and his status has been a bit of a mystery. Mets manager Terry Collins went to see Montero two weeks ago, apparently in an effort to motivate, but it’s looking like this will be a lost year for him.
