Nathan Eovaldi suffers setback during bullpen

Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi suffered a setback during his most recent bullpen. Per Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe, Eovaldi is dealing with biceps soreness, pushing his next scheduled bullpen back.

Eovaldi, 29, is currently working his way back after undergoing surgery in April to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. The original timetable had him slated to return in mid-June, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.

The Red Sox and Eovaldi agreed on a four-year, $68 million contract in December after he helped his team win a championship. After coming over from the Rays, Eovaldi posted a 3.33 ERA with a 48/12 K/BB ratio in 54 innings in the regular season, then limited the opposition to four earned runs in 22 1/3 innings in the postseason. In four starts to begin the 2019 season, Eovaldi relented 14 earned runs in 21 innings.

In Eovaldi’s absence, the Red Sox have had trouble filling out the back of the rotation. Hector Velázquez, Ryan Weber, and Josh Smith have made starts in Eovaldi’s place but have not found success, owning respective ERAs of 5.97, 5.12, and 6.35.
