After posting a 3.08 ERA with 9.3 K/9 from 2013-2014, Ottavino logged 10 1/3 scoreless innings to begin last season and notched three saves after replacing LaTroy Hawkins as closer, but he soon landed on the disabled list with triceps inflammation and required Tommy John surgery in May. He will likely be sidelined until around the All-Star break next year.
Ottavino turned 30 in November and was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter. This new deal covers one year of free agency. You can understand the appeal for the Rockies if he comes back healthy, but it also provides security for Ottavino if he runs into some issues.
