The Nationals lead the Astros 2-0 and can still potentially sweep this thing. If they do not take it in four games, however, they have learned that they will have a special guest for Game 5: President Donald Trump.
Trump said yesterday that he plans to attend Game 5 of the World Series at Nationals Park on Sunday if the series is still underway. He said, though, and the Nationals have confirmed that he will not throw the ceremonial first pitch. He joked that he wouldn’t do that because he’d have to wear a bulletproof vest and that he’d “look too heavy” with it on under his clothes.
So who will throw out the first pitch? Chef José Andrés, who at one time planned to open a restaurant in Trump’s D.C. hotel but pulled out after Trump made disparaging comments about Mexicans during the 2016 campaign. Since then he and the Trump organization sued one another, then settled, and since then Andrés has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s.
I’m not a betting man, so I won’t bet on whether we’ll even have a Game 5. If we do, though, I really would like the chance to bet on whether Trump actually shows up or, in the face of what will likely be a hostile reception by his very presence and the presence of a prominent critic tossing out the first pitch, he bails on it. I think “Trump bails” is probably the safer money at this point.
