Adalberto Mondesi to have shoulder surgery, out five to six months

Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and will miss five to six months, MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan reports. Mondesi suffered a joint tear on Sunday. He still may be ready for Opening Day next year.

Mondesi, 24, put up a subpar .715 OPS across 443 plate appearances, but used his speed to accrue 20 doubles, 10 triples, and 43 stolen bases (in 50 attempts). Including his above-average defense, Baseball Reference lists him with 2.5 Wins Above Replacement, the third-best total among position players on the Royals. He trailed Whit Merrifield (3.7) and Jorge Soler (3.3).

The Royals won’t be expected to contend next year and Mondesi is still pre-arbitration, so there is no need to rush him back for the start of the season.
