Steve Kerr: ‘Bryce [Harper], come to the Giants. Let’s go.’

On Saturday, before the Golden State Warriors played the Miami Heat on Saturday evening, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was asked about recent rumors linking free agent outfielder Bryce Harper with the Giants.

Kerr said, “That would be fun. I would love it if Bryce Harper came here. Does my opinion count here?” He added, “Bryce, come to the Giants. Let’s go.”

Earlier today, we learned that the Giants plan to make a short-term offer to Harper. Harper’s camp met with the Giants on Monday. The Phillies, Nationals, White Sox, and Padres have all been linked to Harper this offseason and now we can add the Giants into the mix.

The Giants have a projected 40-man roster payroll of $171.5 million, according to Cot’s Contracts, leaving them about $34 million to play with while staying under the competitive balance tax threshold, set at $206 million for the 2019 season.

Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies are going to sign pitcher Drew Smyly. Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philly reported last night that the team and Smyly were chatting.

Smyly opted out of his minor league contract with the Brewers yesterday after allowing seven runs on 10 hits and three walks with 18 strikeouts in 12.2 innings with Triple-A San Antonio and not getting a hint of a call-up to the big club. Earlier this year he pinched off an 8.42 ERA with a 52/34 K/BB ratio in 51.1 innings for the Rangers.

He’s basically a free pitcher for Philly, who could use an arm. If he works out, he works out. If not, no loss. Well, I suppose it’s possible there’d be one loss and some walks and hits in like, four innings, or something, but you know what I mean.
