This is pretty shocking news: Ken Rosenthal reports that CC Sabathia underwent angioplasty on December 11. He had the procedure — which is where doctors insert a stent to open an artery — after experiencing chest pain, acid reflux and an unusual amount of sweating while exercising. Doctors decided to go with the procedure after he struggled to complete a stress test.
Rosenthal says that Sabathia’s prognosis is excellent, both short- and long-term, and that he is expected to report to spring training as scheduled in mid-February. It’s a good thing this was caught when it was, obviously, as he was a strong candidate for a heart attack otherwise.
Sabathia signed a one-year, $8 million contract to return to the Yankees earlier this offseason. Most suspect that 2019 will be his last season in the bigs. Here’s hoping his recovery goes well enough to where it’s a complete and successful season.
