Patrick Mooney and Robert Murray of The Athletic report that Eric Hinske is expected to become the Diamondbacks’ assistant hitting coach. He’ll work under hitting coach Darnell Coles, who was hired at the end of October.

Hinske, 41, coached for the Angels last year and prior to that had been a coach with the Cubs since the 2014 season. The Angels hired Jeremy Reed to replace Hinske earlier this month. There was some thought that Hinske might return to the Cubs.

Hinske spent 12 seasons in the majors, including his final year in 2013 with the D-Backs. The 1B/3B/OF retired batting .249/.332/.430 in 1,387 games.
