The Atlanta Braves have acquired catcher Rafael Lopez from the Padres for cash considerations. That’s about as minor a trade as one can imagine, but we’ll take it.

Lopez, 31, has spent parts of four seasons in the bigs, playing for the Padres, Blue Jays, Reds and Cubs. Last season he hit .176/.265/.284 over 117 plate appearances in 37 games for San Diego, which is the most major league action he’s ever had.

Lopez hit fairly well in the minors over the past couple of seasons. Which is where he’ll likely be for most of 2019 too, given the Braves’ needs and given their widely reported desire to acquire J.T. Realmuto from the Marlins. But hey, there’s dignity in being an organizational depth guy.
