Jung Ho Kang had been cleared to come back to the United States, is apparently sober and in shape and was poised to come back and help the Pirates in any way he could down the stretch. Now that’s all over, as a report from Naver Sports in Korea says that Kang will undergo season-ending surgery on his left wrist. The wrist had been bothering him for most of his extended spring training and rehab games.

Kang finished third in the rookie of the year voting when he hit .287 with 15 homers in 126 games in 2015, and then hit .255 with 21 homers in 103 games in 2016 before losing all of the 2017 and the first part of this season due to visa issues stemming from multiple drunk driving offenses in Korea. Nevertheless, Kang is still under contract with the Pirates for 2019 and will no doubt be in camp for the club. Whether he can make the team after not having seen a single big league pitch in two full seasons is another matter.
