The Rays announced on Wednesday that the club designated shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria for assignment. That clears up a roster space for outfielder Tommy Pham, who was acquired from the Cardinals ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline on Tuesday.

Hechavarria, 29, put up disappointing numbers, batting .258/.289/.332 with three home runs and 26 RBI in 237 plate appearances. He did play above-average defense, but it didn’t outweigh the lack of offense.

The Rays have been playing Willy Adames at shortstop in recent days and can also play Daniel Robertson there if needed.
