Giants second baseman Joe Panik had quite a Monday.
Panik was on a minor league rehab stint, so he woke up at his apartment in the East Bay, drove to Sacramento to play in the Triple-A River Cats’ game against the Iowa Cubs. There Panik flied out in the first inning and then singled in the third inning, at which point he was told he was heading back to join the Giants. Because didn’t have any of his stuff with him, he drove back to his apartment in the Bay Area to grab a bag and hopped on a 4:30PM flight from Oakland to San Diego to join his big league buddies, who were playing an evening game with the Padres.
Panik arrived at Petco Park ten minutes before the game’s first pitch, cooled his heels and watched the game. Until the ninth inning, that is, when he was called on to pinch hit. He flied out, but he did get to enjoy the team’s 12th inning game-winning rally.
The totals for the day: 1-for-3, two cities, two leagues, two airports and a lot of driving around.
