Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Rays pitcher Chris Archer suffered a setback in his rehab from a strained left abdominal muscle. He was scheduled to throw a simulated game today but that has been cancelled.
Archer, 29, has been on the disabled list since June 5. Through 13 starts, he compiled a 4.24 ERA with a 76/26 K/BB ratio in 76 1/3 innings.
Archer’s injury and setback are unfortunate for him but also unfortunate for the Rays as he would have been a hot commodity leading into the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. There’s still time for that to happen, but a lot will depend on Archer’s ability to bounce back from his injury. The right-hander is earning $5.25 million this season and is under contract for $7.5 million next season. He has club options worth $9 million and $11 million for the 2020 and ’21 seasons, respectively.
