J.P. Hoornstra reports that the Dodgers are going to call up pitching prospect Caleb Ferguson. He’s likely to start on Wednesday against the Pirates.
Ferguson, 21, is from my neck of the woods, in West Jefferson, Ohio. He was a 38th round draft pick in 2014, but he was considered a better pitcher than that before dropping that far due to undergoing Tommy John surgery in high school. As it’s been, he has impressed at every stop along the way in the minors. This year he made the leap to Double-A and then, quite quickly, to Triple A, posting a 1.23 ERA and 50/13 K/BB ratio in 44 innings over nine starts.
The Dodgers started out terribly this year, underperforming and suffering injuries to multiple key players. The kids have been helping keep them afloat, and now another kid is about to climb on board.
