Montero, 34, signed with the Nationals shortly before spring training and began the season as Wieters’ backup. When Wieters went on the DL Montero was pressed into starting service and went 0-for-11. That caused Dave Martinez to put Pedro Severino in and he has gone 7-for-19 with a couple of doubles making Montero, as the British say, redundant.
Montero has hit .256/.340/.411 with 126 homers in his 13-year big league career, but he’s fallen off quite a bit in the past few seasons. Barring some catcher injuries elsewhere, it’s hard to see where he might latch on anyplace.
