Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The Indians named Corey Kluber their Opening Day starter. “I think he knows,” Terry Francona said Friday. This will be the ace’s fourth consecutive Opening Day appointment with the club.
Kluber, 31, is returning from a Cy Young Award-winning campaign in 2017. The right-hander went 18-4 in 29 starts with a league-leading 2.25 ERA, 1.6 BB/9, 11.7 SO/9 and three shutouts in 203 2/3 innings. He’s looked just as sharp in spring training, too, allowing eight hits, three runs and three walks in four starts and striking out 19 batters over 13 2/3 innings.
The Indians are scheduled to start the 2018 season on the road. They’ll square off against the Mariners in Seattle at 10:10 PM ET on Thursday, March 29. The Mariners have yet to formally announce an Opening Day starter.
