MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that the Tigers and Giants discussed outfielder J.D. Martinez at the GM meetings last week. Talks haven’t gone far yet, but there could eventually be progress on a deal because the Giants need a corner outfielder and the Tigers want to trim their payroll.

Martinez, 29, is heading into the final year of a two-year contract extension signed this past February. He’ll earn $11.75 million next season before potentially becoming a free agent. He mashed 22 home runs while driving in 68 runs and compiling a .307/.373/.535 triple-slash line in 517 plate appearances this past season.

The Giants currently have Gorkys Hernandez and Mac Williamson in left field on their depth chart as Angel Pagan is now a free agent. Martinez would be a nice upgrade.
