The Reds announced on Thursday that the club claimed utilityman Arismendy Alcantara off waivers from the Athletics. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Reds designated Patrick Kivlehan for assignment.
Alcantara, 24, is now with his third team this year. He started with the Cubs, but they traded him to the A’s on June 9. He only took 19 plate appearances at the big league level this season — all with the Athletics — and hit .211 with one double and three stolen bases in six attempts.
In the majors, Alcantara has logged 292 innings at second base and 429 in center field so he’ll provide some versatility and roster depth for the Reds.
