Rafael Montero lost his spot in the Mets’ starting rotation after another miserable start against the Nationals on Monday. With injured starters Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz working their way back, the Mets are considering a “piggyback” start on Sunday against the Twins if both are healthy enough to pitch by then, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports.
deGrom has been dealing with a sore right forearm. He played catch on Tuesday afternoon and threw 35 pitches off the mound on Monday. Matz, meanwhile, has been dealing with an impingement in his left shoulder for the last month. The lefty will throw off a mound on Wednesday and the club will know more about his status after that.
In the event one or neither pitcher is able to pitch Sunday, the Mets may go with a bullpen game or skip Montero’s spot entirely, moving everyone else in the rotation up by one day.
