Red Sox DH David Ortiz passed Jimmie Foxx for 18th place on baseball’s all-time home runs list on Sunday, and he kept moving up the chain on Monday. The slugger launched a towering home run to right field at Fenway Park in the sixth inning against Orioles reliever Vance Worley.
With that blast, Ortiz tied Mickey Mantle for 17th place on the list. Next up is Mike Schmidt at 548.
Ortiz, 40, entered Monday’s action batting .315/.403/.622, a staggeringly good batting line for anyone, but especially for a 40-year-old. And now he has 33 homers and 111 RBI to go with it. That’s a pretty good farewell season.
