Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe has a strained oblique and intercostal, Phil Miller of the Star Tribune reports. He wants to return by the end of the season, but it’s doubtful, Miller adds. Plouffe injured himself swinging in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Royals.

Miguel Sano and Eduardo Escobar should handle third base while Plouffe is out.

Plouffe, 30, has played in only 84 games this season and has a subpar .260/.303/.420 triple-slash line with 12 home runs and 47 RBI in 344 plate appearances. He’s eligible for arbitration for the fourth and final time after the season, but there’s a distinct possibility the Twins trade or non-tender him rather than pay him a raise on the $7.25 million salary he earned this year.
