Mets manager Terry Collins expects starter Jacob deGrom to miss multiple starts due to tightness in his forearm, ESPN’s Adam Rubin reports. deGrom has been scratched from Tuesday’s start but it sounds like he won’t return until the middle of the month at the earliest.

deGrom, 28, has turned in a terrific season, but he has struggled as of late. In his last three starts, he has allowed 16 runs on 31 hits and seven walks with 14 strikeouts over 14 2/3 innings. He hasn’t pitched into the sixth inning in any of those starts. On the season overall, deGrom owns a 3.04 ERA and a 143/36 K/BB ratio in 148 innings.

The Mets are still technically competitive for the NL East title, but are 9.5 games behind the Nationals. More realistically, they’re shooting for a Wild Card spot. Currently, the club is 1.5 games behind the Cardinals.
