Mariners starter James Paxton was on his way to a complete game win over the Angels, but he took a sharp Andrelton Simmons line drive off of his left elbow with one out in the ninth inning, forcing him out of the game. Fortunately, X-rays came up negative, the Mariners announced after the game. He’s day-to-day with a left elbow contusion and will be reevaluated on Monday.
Paxton still got the win, tossing 8 1/3 innings, yielding only one unearned run on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Across 13 starts, the lefty has a 3.53 ERA with a 73/18 K/BB ratio in 81 2/3 innings.
Paxton is scheduled to start against the Athletics next weekend. The Mariners should have a better idea if he’ll be healthy enough to go once he’s reevaluated.
