ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reported on Wednesday that the Giants are “blanketing” the reliever market. He adds that the club has a scout in Philadelphia, looking at relievers Jeanmar Gomez and David Hernandez.
Gomez, 28, has done a great job as the Phillies’ closer. He has 25 saves in 28 opportunities with a 2.82 ERA and a 29/11 K/BB ratio in 44 2/3 innings. The Giants’ scout, however, likely saw Gomez blow a 2-0 lead on Monday night. The right-hander is earning $1.4 million this season and will be eligible for arbitration for the third and final time after the season.
Hernandez, 31, has been inconsistent, posting a 4.43 ERA with a 56/20 K/BB ratio in 44 2/3 innings. He’s earning $3.9 million and will be eligible for free agency after the season.
