After dropping Sunday’s game 12-1, the Reds decided to shake things up, firing pitching coach Mark Riggins. The club announced that assistant pitching coach and bullpen coach Mack Jenkins will replace Riggins. Ted Power, the pitching coach at Triple-A Louisville, will take over Jenkins’ old job.

Riggins was the pitching coordinator for the Reds’ minor league system from 2012-15. The Reds made him their pitching coach early last offseason.

The Reds’ starting rotation has an aggregate 5.23 ERA, the second-worst mark in baseball behind the Twins (5.51). The Reds’ 5.95 bullpen ERA is the worst mark in baseball by a large margin. The Rockies are second-worst at 5.02.

In fairness to Riggins, one can only do so much with so little, but pitching coaches, hitting coaches, and managers tend to take the fall even when rebuilding teams falter.
