MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan reports that Omar Infante cleared waivers, so he’s now a free agent. Infante was designated for assignment by the Royals last week. The Royals will foot the bill for Infante’s $7.75 million salary this season, $8 million next season, and $2 million for his voided 2018 club option.
Though Infante is 34 years old and mustered a paltry .239/.279/.321 triple-slash line in 149 plate appearances with the Royals, he should still generate some interest as he’s a veteran with tons of versatility. In his 15-year major league career, Infante has, of course, played mostly at second base and shortstop, but also has experience playing third base and all three outfield spots.
