The Phillies announced on Sunday afternoon that the club claimed reliever Phil Klein off waivers from the Rangers, then optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Klein, 27, was designated for assignment by the Rangers on June 9 to create roster space for catcher Robinson Chirinos, who was activated from the disabled list. Klein, a right-hander, surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings with the Rangers.
Klein has only 45 innings of work in the majors under his belt. Prior to 2016, he had posted great numbers in the minor leagues.
