And That Happened: Wednesday’s scores and highlights

You get the short version this morning, folks, as your blogger is somewhat exhausted after a late night. The occasion: seeing Jason Isbell, his favorite artist, in concert 100 miles out of town before driving back in the wee wee hours this morning. The show was fantastic. Sadly, however, of three possible baseball references your blogger thought were reasonably possible, only one came to pass last evening:

  • As I mentioned yesterday, Isbell is a Braves fan. He did not, however, mention that they were playing Cincinnati even though we were in Cincinnati. Maybe he just didn’t know that Freddie Freeman was in the process of hitting for the cycle as he played. I hope a roadie was fired for not telling him as he switched out guitars between songs.
  • Isbell did not play “Super 8,” which is a hell of a rocker and contains the line “Then a big boy busted in/Screaming at his girlfriend/Waving around a Fungo bat.” Who writes songs with the word “Fungo bat” in them? No one! This is why I love the dude.
  • Isbell did, however, play the song “Relatively Easy,” which contains the line “Remember him when he was still a proud man/A vandal’s smile a baseball in his right hand/Nothing but the blue sky in his eye.” Of course he’s singing about a friend who overdosed on Klonopin, so it’s not the most uplifting thing ever, but that’s not for me to understand.

Anyway: I’m happy but tired. And you guys get stuck with a mere rundown of scores. Sorry. I’ll do better tomorrow. In the meantime, go buy “Southeastern” and “Something More Than Free.” Change your life, man.
