Corner infielder Mike Olt has a new home, as he has signed a minor league contract with the Padres, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The deal doesn’t include an invitation to big league camp.
Olt, 27, was released by the White Sox on Tuesday. He had been designated for assignment on March 6 to clear roster space for Austin Jackson. He then cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte.
Olt hasn’t been able to find success at the major league level after being ranked among baseball’s top prospects going into the 2012 and ’13 seasons. In 400 big league plate appearances, he has a .580 OPS.
