Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers have signed third baseman Casey McGehee to a minor league deal. Given where McGehee is at in his career this is obviously a total depth move which will likely have little if any impact on the Tigers regular season absent a big injury or three.
In 2015 McGehee hit .198/.264/.274 while splitting time between the Marlins and the Giants. That was a year after he won the Comeback Player of the Year award and convinced the Giants to give him nearly $5 million. This despite his comeback year not being especially good considering he is an inner-circle member of the Grounding into Double Plays Hall of Fame.
But if Nick Castellanos, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez fall into an unusually wide open manhole whilst strolling, arm-in-arm down a Lakeland, Florida sidewalk this week, there is now a major leaguer who can fill in for a time.
