MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that the Reds and Blue Jays are discussing a deal involving outfielder Jay Bruce. The match makes sense, as the Reds are rebuilding and the Jays are in want of an outfielder. Heyman hears that the proposed deal is a three-way trade in which Michael Saunders would go to the Angels and the Reds would ostensibly get prospects.
Bruce, 28, will earn $12.5 million this season and has a $1 million buyout for the 2017 season which would make him a free agent. He’s coming off back-to-back poor seasons, posting a .654 OPS in 2014 and .729 this past season. Bruce doesn’t provide much in the way of average or getting on base, but he has plenty of pop and that could fit in nicely with the powerful Jays lineup.
Jose Bautista currently holds down right field, so if the Jays were to acquire Bruce, he would likely switch to left field.
