Parmelee, 27, hit a paltry .216/.255/.433 with four home runs and nine RBI in 102 plate appearances with the Orioles last season and has been a subpar hitter over parts of five seasons in the majors overall. The Yankees lost Greg Bird to right shoulder surgery earlier this month, which repaired a torn labrum, so the addition of Parmelee makes sense. Parmelee can also back up in the outfield if needed.
Parmelee hit much better at Triple-A Norfolk last year, posting an .830 OPS over 272 plate appearances, and he doesn’t carry a platoon split. One could do much worse with depth additions.
