Why haven’t the Orioles signed Yovani Gallardo yet?

It’s been one week since the Orioles were said to be close to signing free agent right-hander Yovani Gallardo and no deal has been made, but according to Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun the two sides still seem headed to an agreement eventually.

Encina reports that both sides “are still optimistic a deal will get done” but adds that “they’re running out of time for Gallardo to report along with other pitchers and catchers on Thursday.” Of course, Gallardo being there on Day 1 of spring training isn’t particularly crucial.

Also worth noting is that Encina is one of several writers reporting on the Gallardo negotiations to say “the ball is in the Orioles’ court.” For instance, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com used exactly that same phrasing last week. Read into that however much you want, but whatever the case Gallardo is still viewed as likely to wind up in Baltimore on a multi-year contract that requires the Orioles to forfeit a draft pick.
