The Orioles have been mentioned as a possible suitor for one of the Rockies’ outfielders — Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon, Corey Dickerson — this winter, which has led to speculation that right-hander Kevin Gausman could be part of a return package. During an appearance on 105.7 The Fan this afternoon, Orioles manager Buck Showalter was asked about Gausman’s status. He quickly squashed the trade speculation.
After losing left-hander Wei-Yin Chen in free agency, the Orioles’ starting rotation is already lacking in quality. Trading Gausman, who likely represents their best chance of having an ace, would be counterproductive when quality bats are still available in free agency.
Gausman, who turned 25 earlier this month, posted a 4.25 ERA and 103/29 K/BB ratio over 112 1/3 innings last season between the rotation and the bullpen.
