Anthony Bass leaves Mariners to join Japanese team

Right-hander Anthony Bass asked for and was granted his release by the Mariners so that he could pursue a more lucrative deal to pitch for a team in Japan.

Bass was on the 40-man roster after being acquired from the Rangers along with Leonys Martin in November, but as a 28-year-old journeyman with a 4.40 ERA in 278 innings as a big leaguer he wasn’t guaranteed an Opening Day spot on the pitching staff.

Bass was San Diego’s fifth-round draft pick in 2008 and debuted for the Padres in 2011 at age 23. He was later traded to the Astros, signed with the Rangers as a free agent, and was finally dealt to the Mariners.
