The Marlins have announced that Jeff Mathis has agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract to remain with the club. He’ll be the backup to J.T. Realmuto once again.
Mathis only played in 32 games, missing considerable time due to a broken finger. He hit a mere .161/.214/.290 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 103 plate appearances, but with backup catchers defense, maturity, mentoring and all of that jazz is way more important to a club and Mathis has that in spades. Many talk about him as a future manager. They’re probably right about that.
