It looks like a National League East showdown for Ben Zobrist, with FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reporting that the free agent is expected to make a decision within the next 48 hours.

The two favorites appear to be the Mets and the Nationals. Zobrist visited with the Giants in San Francisco on Sunday, but he’s said to prefer playing second base. The Giants already have Joe Panik at second base, so they are looking at him mostly as a left fielder. Zobrist is expected to visit with the Nationals at the Winter Meetings on Tuesday while Kristie Ackert of Newsday hears that he’ll talk over offers with his agents on Wednesday. That could be decision-time.

Zobrist, who turns 35 next May, posted an .809 OPS (120 OPS+) over 126 games this past season between the Athletics and Royals. He’s expected to land a four-year contract in the range of $60 million.
