Back in May, when the Brewers fired manager Ron Roenicke and replaced him with Craig Counsell, they tried to hire Triple-A manager Pat Murphy from the Padres organization to become Counsell’s bench coach.
San Diego blocked the move and six weeks later it became clear why, as the Padres fired manager Bud Black and replaced him with Murphy. However, they decided after the season not to bring back Murphy as manager and–finally, nearly six months later–he’s joined Counsell as the Brewers’ bench coach, according to Jim Goulart of Brewerfan.net.
Murphy coached Counsell in college at Notre Dame and has tons of coaching and managing experience in college and the minors, so he makes sense as a right-hand man for a first-time manager. He was 42-54 as the Padres’ manager.
