Masahiro Tanaka undergoes elbow surgery to remove bone spur

Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka underwent elbow surgery today, but it wasn’t the Tommy John variety that’s been looming over him as a possibility since last season. Instead he had a relatively minor surgery to remove a bone spur that had been an issue dating back to his days in Japan.

Tanaka not only avoided Tommy John surgery after many people last year assumed it was a matter of when not if, he actually pitched very well this season with a 3.51 ERA and 139/27 K/BB ratio in 154 innings.

Assuming everything goes smoothly Tanaka will have plenty of time to be fully healthy for spring training.
