The Mets made one seemingly insignificant roster change ahead of the NLCS against the Cubs, dropping right-hander Erik Goeddel for lefty Sean Gilmartin. However, due to a death in Jon Niese‘s family, the Mets may have to play short a lefty reliever for a game, Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal reports.

Niese, 28, faced only one batter in relief during the NLDS, retiring Justin Ruggiano on strikes in Game 2. The lefty finished out the season in the bullpen after posting a 4.16 ERA and a 112/54 K/BB ratio over 173 innings as a starter.
