Ventura, not Cueto, in line to start playoff opener for Royals

Things could change between now and then, but for now the Royals have set their rotation so that Johnny Cueto will start the regular season finale Sunday against the Twins.

That also means Cueto would be on schedule to start Game 2 of the ALDS, which is certainly a change from the Royals’ plan when they acquired him from the Reds at the trade deadline to serve as their ace.

Barring a change Yordano Ventura, not Cueto, is in line to start Game 1 of the ALDS. Ventura was so bad earlier this season that the Royals briefly demoted him to the minors, but the 24-year-old right-hander is 6-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 70/25 K/BB ratio in 61 innings since mid-August. By comparison, Cueto is 3-6 with a 4.99 ERA and 50/11 K/BB ratio in 70 innings since joining the Royals in late July.
