Greg Holland, diagnosed last week with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, will undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery this Friday in Los Angeles, per MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan.

The rest and rehab will take at least 12 months, which means Holland is going to have to miss the entire 2016 season. That’s terrible timing for a guy who was entering his final winter of arbitration eligibility. He’ll likely be a non-tender and have to settle for a prove-your-health style of contract heading into 2017.

Holland ranked among the very best closers in baseball in 2013-2014, totaling 93 saves alongside a 1.32 ERA. But the shine began to wear off this summer and he’ll be 31 years old the next time he’s fully healthy.

Wade Davis has taken over at closer for the AL Central-champion Royals.
