Sonny Gray complained of hip soreness after Friday’s start against the Giants and Jane Lee of MLB.com reports that the Athletics have decided to shut him down early.

It was assumed that Barry Zito’s final appearance was Saturday’s meeting with former “Big Three” member Tim Hudson, but he’ll start in Gray’s place on Wednesday against the Angels. The veteran left-hander will be going on three days’ rest, but he only threw 48 pitches on Saturday. Athletics manager Bob Melvin told Lee that Zito could threw as many as 70 pitches on Wednesday.

As for Gray, he’ll wrap up his season with a 2.73 ERA and 169/59 K/BB ratio in 208 innings over 31 starts. He’s been a steady presence on a staff which has used 13 starters this season.
