Masahiro Tanaka could return next week

The Yankees announced yesterday that Masahiro Tanaka, who is suffering with a low-level hamstring straing — will throw a bullpen session soon and could be cleared to rejoin the starting rotation as early as Monday or Tuesday.

Tanaka has dealt with numerous ailments this season but he has been arguably the Yankees’ best starter, posting a 3.38 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 136/26 K/BB ratio across 149 innings.

If, as it appears likely, the Yankees are going to be in the Wild Card game, it’ll be interesting to see if they have Tanaka make that start or, rather, someone like Luis Severino. Or just go all-hands-on-deck with it and worry about the ALDS if and when it comes.
