Nationals GM declines to say Matt Williams will be back as manager

During a local radio interview this afternoon Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo was asked whether Matt Williams will remain the team’s manager next season and he declined to give a straightforward yes or no answer, instead saying “we’ll let the chips fall where they may.”

Back in spring training the Nationals exercised their 2016 team option on Williams and they also hold another team option for 2017, so a GM not simply saying “yes” when asked about the job status of an under-contract manager sure makes it sound like a change is coming.

Williams has drawn a ton of criticism for his in-game strategy and stubborn refusal to alter his preferred bullpen usage patterns, and the Nationals are arguably the most disappointing team in baseball at 78-72 after coming into the year as a popular World Series pick. Of course, Williams is also less than a year removed from being voted Manager of the Year.
