Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina exited yesterday’s Cardinals-Cubs game with a sprained left thumb. He was injured tagging out Anthony Rizzo on a sac-fly attempt in the eighth, fielding the throw from Jason Heyward in right on Addison Russell‘s no-out, bases-loaded fly ball. Big out, but a potential big loss for the Cards.
Molina said he’ll have an MRI on the thumb today and after that we’ll know it’s actual seriousness. However, the fact that the tough-as-nails Molina even left a game says something. As do the words of his manager afterward. Mike Matheny said, “I’m concerned.”
Defensively speaking, Tony Cruz is not Molina, but he’s about as little as a falloff as one could hope for from the seven-time gold glover. He is a total non-entity at the plate, however, and even Molina’s off year with the stick is leaps and bounds better. And that’s before you think about the unmeasurable factors like pitchers’ overall comfort with Molina, Cardinals Devil Magic and the like.
A potential big blow for St. Louis. Keep your fingers crossed for those MRI results, Cardinals Nation.
