For one day at least White Sox right-hander Jeff Samardzija put his months-long struggles on hold to slice up the free-falling Tigers, throwing a complete-game, one-hit shutout on just 88 pitches.
Samardzija came into the game with a 5.27 ERA overall this season, including a 9.24 ERA since August 1, and he got rocked for 10 runs in his last outing. In that September 15 start against the A’s he needed 91 pitches to record nine outs.
And then he needed just 88 pitches to record 27 outs against a Tigers lineup that was missing Miguel Cabrera and basically decided to surrender in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Samardzija threw 60 of 88 pitches for strikes, struck out six and walked zero, and allowed only a fifth-inning single to Victor Martinez. He never even got to a three-ball count on any hitter.
