Matt Adams is “very, very close” to playing first base

Matt Adams has served as strictly a pinch-hitter since returning from the disabled list, but the Cardinals first baseman now says he’s “very, very close” to playing the field again.

Adams missed nearly four months with a torn quadriceps muscle and hasn’t played an inning at first base since May 26, but getting him ready for a full-scale role for the playoffs could be key for St. Louis.

Adams was off to a slow start before going on the disabled list, but he’s a career .278 hitter with a .456 slugging percentage and the Cardinals could really use his left-handed bat in October.
